Basketballghana.com can confirm the draw for the basketball competitions at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan has been conducted.

The draw was held earlier today in Mies, Switzerland with few people in attendance; due to COVID 19, the event was done virtually.

Africa’s sole representative in the Women’s Division, Nigeria, was drawn in Group B alongside defending champions USA, France and host nation Japan.

Nigeria lost to USA at the 2019 Basketball World Cup and has a tough challenge with Japan’s home support as there could be fans in the stands come July based on the success of COVID vaccination roll outs in the country.

In the Men’s Division, Nigeria has been drawn in Group B alongside dark horse finalist Australia with two spots to be determined later this year through qualification tournaments in Serbia and Croatia.

Fellow African nations Senegal and Tunisia will compete in those tournaments respectively and could qualify to compete in the main tournament.

Angola is to compete in the qualification tournament in Lithuania and should they progress they will end up in Group C alongside Argentina, Japan and Spain.
