In the aftermath of qualifying to compete in the 2021 FIBA African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) for the first time ever, South Sudan is one the verge of setting up a national basketball team for women.
This latest development continues a run of positive marks chalked up by the East African country that gained independence in 2011.

President of South Sudan Basketball Federation, Luol Deng, has been at the helm of the quick transformation and expressed his excitement over the Women’s National Basketball Team.

Deng, who starred in the NBA for Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, released a statement with respect to the development and stated the team has been accepted by basketball’s world governing body FIBA and has been drawn in Zone 5 on the continent.
The release also pointed out that South Sudan’s Women’s Basketball Team will compete for a place in the 2021 AfroBasket with qualification dates and location yet to be announced.

South Sudan’s Men’s Team will play in this year’s AfroBasket to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in September.
