St. Augustine’s beat Insaniyya 31-24 in the male competition.

2016 National High School Basketball Male Champions St. Augustine’s College has clinched a 31-24 win over Insaniyya Senior High School.

Augustine’s sealed the win in the opening game in the male division of the Central Regional qualifiers taking place at the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape-Coast.

An upset was on the cards right from tip off with minnows Insaniyya racing out to an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes of the first half.

However, Augustine’s settled in and fought back to nick a 13-8 lead heading to the second quarter with Aminu Mohammed and Michael Atopey leading the charge.

Mohammed was exceptional in the second half as he drained a three point shot before scoring a beautiful layup that got the bench on its feet.

Insaniyya threatened to pull even by converting from free throws and fast break layups as the opposing side committed several turnovers.

In the end, the January 2016 winners held on to an 18-16 second half win to see the game out. Places at the 2018 Sprite Ball Championship are up for grabs.
