The NBA in partnership with Solektra International will install solar powered lights on courts in select countries in Africa.

Solektra International is an energy solutions company committed to investing in economic growth and employment on the continent.

The agreement is a multiyear partnership that aims to provide cheap accessible energy to the continent’s significant youth population.

Speaking at the launch of the partnership, CEO of African Development Solutions (ADS) Group, Solektra International and Akon Lighting Africa, Samba Bathily reiterated the importance of having power available.

“We are looking forward to working with the NBA to empower our youth by providing access to renewable energy in communities” he said.

The announcement comes at a time many courts in many countries lack power forcing young individuals interested in basketball to abandon games during late hours.

Senegal is primed to be among the first beneficiaries of the project with courts in the West African nation capital Dakar and Theis earmarked for development.

Solektra and Senegal’s Basketball Federation support the Junior NBA.
